Hunting the Paybe: one of the rarest animals in Southern Mexico
Article Abstract:
White-lipped peccaries are prized for their meat and are also hunted for sport and their pelts. These animals form large, cohesive, permanent groups and herds of more than 100 animals are common in the Amazon Basin. Paybe is the term that Mayan folklore calls the leader of such herds. A narrative of a Mexican hunting trip to collar one of these animals is presented.
