'I have reported on astonishing achievements in times of hardship.'
Article Abstract:
There have been complicated social readjustments within the east German scientific community following reunification. More than half of east German scientists lost their job following reunification, while most of those who remained in work started to report to west German research directors. There has been particular tension in Berlin, Germany, where western scientists were forced to share their financial resources with their new eastern colleagues. Shortages of funds have forced the west German scientific community to become much more competitive.

Funding forces fusion project out of Europe
Article Abstract:
A Franco-German statement announced withdrawal of sponsorship in setting up the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Europe. The French and German research ministries project their inability to meet the basic cost of hosting ITER and support the European Commission's proposal for lowering the projected cost to the host country. While the Franco-German statement makes no committment to reconsider its decision, it reiterates its support for ITER and fusion research in general.

German research bodies urged to open up more to new ideas
Article Abstract:
A report from an external evaluation committee made up of 10 non-German scientists and science-policy experts into the management of the Max Planck Society and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft highlights many well-known difficulties in German science. These include poor academic career prospects for young researchers and working conditions that prevent women making progress. The report recommends that the German postdoctoral teaching and research qualification known as 'Habilitation' should be dropped.
