Identification of a galaxy responsible for a high-redshift Lyman-alpha absorption system
Article Abstract:
Spectroscopic observations in the field of quasar 2233 + 131 have led to identification of a galaxy DLA 2233 + 131, which is related to a known damped Lyman-alpha absorption system. This galaxy shows no evidence of an active nucleus and its properties closely resemble those of young disk galaxies that are in the early stages of formation. The spectroscopic studies are conducted using a low resolution imaging spectrograph, and the spectra contain a prominent Lyalpha line emission. These results provide strong backing to the notion that damped Lyman-alpha systems may be young high red-shift galaxies.

The O/C abundance ratio in absorbing gas clouds at high redshift
Article Abstract:
Absorption lines in the spectra of quasar HS1700+6416, which has a redshift of z=2.72, indicate a ratio of the abundance of oxygen to that of carbon in intergalactic gas clouds that is three to five times higher than the O/C ratio found in the Solar System. The visibility of helium lines and continuum absorption in the ultraviolet spectrum indicates that the background ionizing radiation field has not been influenced by the decay of massive neutrinos. These results support the elimination of such neutrinos as a candidate for dark matter.

A companion to a quasar at redshift z = 4.7
Article Abstract:
The Lyman-alpha emission from a companion to the quasar at redshift z = 4.7 suggests an age related to the initial stages of formation of the universe. A large portion of the emission is due to a gaseous nebula photoionized by the quasar. The rest of the light appears to be due to quasar light scattered from dust in the companion body or emission from young stars in the nebula. The observations probably indicate the initial stages of formation of a galaxy-sized structure.
