Identifying the forces responsible for self-organization of nanostructures at crystal surfaces
Article Abstract:
Ordering forces in a virtually perfect triangular lattice of nanometre-sized vacancy islands, formed when a silver monolayer on ruthenium (0001) is exposed to sulphur, were identified and measured. Time-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy was used to monitor thermal fluctuations, and elastic constants of the lattice were obtained to quantify that of weak forces are responsible for its stability.

Self-assembled domain patterns
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the spontaneous formation of ordered domain patterns in physical and chemical systems due to interactions which compete interatomically. Patterns formed by lead on copper are discussed.
