Immobile plasticizer in flexible PVC
Article Abstract:
Plasticized ply(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is a widely used polymeric material and contains up to 40% di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer. The plasticizer has been detected in storage media and this is of concern as it is a lipid-removing liver carcinogen. Coating, grafting or blending PVC with other polymers have all been used in attempts to prevent the migration. A new surface-modification method has been developed to prevent the migration, using a treatment of sodium sulphide in the presence of a suitable phase-transfer catalyst in water.

Atomic structure and electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) can probe the prediction that carbon nanotubes are metallic or semiconducting depending on their diameter and graphitic ring helicity. STM measurements of the atomic structure and electronic properties of single-walled nanotubes SWNTs are reported, concluding that electronic properties depend on diameter and helicity.
