Oxidative damage in Alzheimer's
Article Abstract:
An immunocytochemical method, using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine labeling to detect bimacromolecular-linked carbonyl-reactivity, is an effective method for determining the extent and localization of oxidative damage in Alzheimer's disease. The hippocampal tissues of patients of Alzheimer's disease contain high levels of carbonyls in the neuronal and glial nuclei, and neuronal cytoplasm. The neurofibrillar tangles are the main site of oxidative damage. The method is highly sensitive and specific for carbonyls formed by the oxidation of lysine, arginine, threonine and proline.

Hypothalamic CART is a new anorectic peptide regulated by leptin
Article Abstract:
The expression of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) mRNA in the arcuate nucleus of genetically obese rodents is determined by leptin signalling, as disruption of either circulating leptin levels or the leptin receptor leads to reduced expression of CART. It appears that circulating leptin is usually a repressor of neuropeptide Y (NPY) production in the arcuate nucleus. Leptin-mediate suppression of food intake could be regulated by a balanced reduction and induction of NPY and CART respectively.
