In situ multi-satellite detection of coherent vortices as a manifestation of Alfvenci turbulence
Article Abstract:
A distinct class of vortex motion, short- scale drift-kinetic Alfven (DKA) vortices, in the magnetospheric cusp region of the Earth was discovered by the Cluster satellites. The DKA vortices are useful for transporting plasma particles and energy through the magnetospheric boundary layers.

Knotted threads of darkness
Article Abstract:
Combinations of optical laser beams are experimentally created in which dark threads form stable loops that are linked and knotted. The precision control of light beams that is required to create complex regions of zero light intensity is demonstrated.

Turbulence on a small scale
Article Abstract:
The detection of small-scale vortices in the magnetosphere of the Earth by the four-spacecraft Cluster mission is discussed. Processes transferring energy and momentum from the solar wind to the magnetosphere are revealed.
