The metapopulation capacity of a fragmented landscape
Article Abstract:
The metapopulation capacity is a new measure for highly fragmented landscapes, and an empirical example on multiple networks occupied by and endangered butterfly species is presented.

Multiple equilibria in metapopulation dynamics
Article Abstract:
A study of the butterfly Melitaea cinxia in Finland shows that the butterfly metapopulation has many equilibria because of the relation between the size of the habitat and the local population. Immigration affects the size of local population and decreases the chances of the species becoming extinct. Populations with many equilibria may become extinct even without any significant changes in the habitat.

Inbreeding and extinction in a butterfly metapopulation
Article Abstract:
A new study provides clear evidence that genetic factors play an important part in determining the risk of extinction in small and isolated populations. The study of the Glanville fritillary butterfly, Melitaea cinxia, shows that loss of genetic diversity and inbreeding can reduce the species to extinction levels. The results have particular relevance in the light of the large number of species with small, local populations caused by habitat fragmentation and loss.
