Independent scientific review in natural resource management
Article Abstract:
The Society for Conservation Biology supports the use of independent scientific review (ISR) in natural resource management. ISR helps to guarantee that the best scientific knowledge available is brought to bear on environmental policy and decision making. An ISR should be conducted in cases in which the decision is controversial or seriously disputed, especially when there is risk of serious negative effects. A set format is not recommended.

The use of core areas in comprehensive mitigation strategies
Article Abstract:
Buchanan et al have missed the point of the recent paper on the core area concept's use in mitigation strategies. The intent was not to develop a comprehensive mitigation strategy, and the core area concept was never intended as a sufficient mitigation strategy in itself. The intent was to offer the core area idea as an empirically based method for estimating area requirements of species that have a home range or territory.

On experimentation and the study of corridors: Response to Beier and Noss
Article Abstract:
Studies by Beier & Noss suggest that corridors are valuable as conservation tools for some species and landscapes and that trade-offs exist between connectivity and other means of landscape management. The researchers have adopted experimental approaches to studying corridors.
