Indicator taxa, rapid biodiversity assessment, and nestedness in an endangered ecosystem
Article Abstract:
An assessment is presented on the use of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera as indicator species, using as examples oak savannas in southern Ontario which are highly fragmented. Hymenoptera morphospecies were significantly correlated with species richness scores, while both Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera exhibited high levels of nestedness, indicating local extinctions are important richness determinants.

Critical biodiversity
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that ecosystems naturally establish ordered states rather than develop chaotic processes leading to mass extinction. Using a computer model to evaluate the dynamic vector for environmental niches, studies showed that natural selection creates a complex and interactive but intrinsically stable state in which global perturbations are needed to cause extinction.

Conservation Genetics of Potentially Endangered Mutualisms: Reduced Levels of Genetic Variation in Specialist versus Generalist Bees
Article Abstract:
Findings show that oligolectic bees may face greater risk of extinction due to the interrelationship between reduced effective population size and their limited range of host plants.
