Japan opens new era in university funding
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government has introduced a new grant scheme to be run by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), an agency affiliated with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. NEDO has awarded 95 of 109 of its first research grants to various Japanese universities. The Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbusho) and Science and Technology Agency have also announced several schemes for grants in various fields following the precedent shown by NEDO. Monbusho was solely responsible for research funding earlier. The aim of these grants is to establish new technologies.

Article Abstract:
The Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) have decided to setup two new companies at a cost of 10-11 billion yen in six years for research and development work in genomics. MITI's Helix Institute will concentrate on developing technological methods for analyzing the functions and characteristics of genetic sequences. MHW's Pharma-Genocyte Institute will focus on family analysis of the Japanese population for gene-related diseases. These two companies will receive collaboration from private pharmaceutical, chemical and optical industries.

Research funds new friends in Japan's diet...
Article Abstract:
Japan's new ruling coalition is significantly more pro-science than the previous Diet, especially among the younger members of the Liberal Democratic Party such as Koichi Kato and Koji Omi. The second supplementary budget in 1995 includes billions of US dollars for science. Scientists are happy with the new focus but some are not sure it will last. An example of the new focus is that the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture will receive US$2.24 billion for frontier research grants in addition to its normal funds.
