Stallion harassment and the mating system of horses
Article Abstract:
Horses have a unique mating system and is similar to that of some primates. Feral horses live in breeding groups, called bands, usually containing one to five stallions. A new study investigates the behaviors of individuals in single and multi-stallion bands and puts forward a new theory, the consort hypothesis, as an explanation for multistallion bands.
