Inferring complex phylogenies
Article Abstract:
Complex phylogenies of angiosperms may be accurately simulated using only nucleotide sequences of their 18S ribosomal RNA genes and without the involvement of any complex evolutionary models. A phylogenetic simulation of 228 species of angiosperms reveals accurate reconstructions using sequences only 5,000 nucleotides long. The simplicity of reconstruction appears to be influenced by the dispersal of noise in the data set across the several branches in the phylogenetic tree. Noise dispersal inhibits covarying patterns of homoplasy between any two taxa.

The transcriptional cofactor complex CRSP is required for activity of the enhancer-binding protein Sp1
Article Abstract:
The multistep process of gene transcription in metazoans is triggered by factors that recognize transcriptional enhance sites in DNA. These work with co-activators in directing transcriptional initiation by the RNA polymerase II apparatus. TAFII subunits of transcription factor TFIID, act as activator targets. A new human factor, CRSP, is needed, along with the TAFIIs for transcriptional activation by Sp1. CRSP33 is a homologue of Med7, a yeast mediator subunit, and CRSP p200 is the same as the nuclear hormone-receptor co-activator subunit TRIP2/PBP.

The chicken B locus is a minimal essential major histocompatibility complex
Article Abstract:
The sequence of the area that determines rapid allograft rejection in chicks, the chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is reported. Most of the genes have counterparts in the human MHC, but are organized with the class III region genes situated outside the class II and class I region genes. There are no protoeasome genes and the presence of putative natural killer receptor genes is unprecedented.
