Influence of dietary cation-anion balance during the dry period on the occurence of parturient paresis in cows fed excess calcium
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of a low dietary cation-anion balance in preventing milk fever and udder edema in dry cows consuming high-calcium diet and the effect of this diet on calves borne to these cows were evaluated using 70 primiparous or multiparous cows and 50 pregnant heifers. Weekly blood and urine samples were collected from 3rd week prepartum till 3rd week postpartum and blood samples were drawn from calves at parturition then weekly thereafter for 3 weeks. The diet did not reduce the incidence of milk fever nor did it affect the acid-base balance or plasma mineral content of their calves; but it was noted to have had a positive effect on udder edema.

Comparison of larkspur alkaloid extract and lithium chloride in maintaining cattle aversion to larkspur in the field
Article Abstract:
The emetic effects of lithium chloride and larkspur(Delphinium barbeyi) alkaloid extract as aversive stimulus were compared in twogroups of cattle by offering fresh larkspur and then gavaging either LiCl at 200 mg/KBW or alkaloid extract at 1.1 to 1.6 mL/KBW with a third group recieving water as control. The alkali group took four doses to develop an aversion compared with the lithium group which took two. Two field trials done revealed that the two test group generally abstained from eating larkspur, while in the second trial, though both groups did not abstain completely, they ate less than half as much as the control.
