Influence of habitat abundance and fragmentation on northern spotted owls in western Oregon
Article Abstract:
The impact of habitat conditions and fragmentation on northern spotted-owl site selection, reproductive success and site occupancy was examined. Findings showed that site selection by spotted owls may be strongly affected by landscape characteristics within a 0.8 km radius. No significant association was found between forest fragmentation indices and site selection. Major influences of landscape pattern were related to amount of habitat.

Within-stand nest site selection by spotted owls in the eastern Washington Cascades
Article Abstract:
Some 62 nest sites of the northern spotted owl are investigated to verify whether the specie's habitat selection behavior conformed to an antipredator approach. The nest sites, which were located in mixed conifer forests in the Cascade Mountains, WA, were compared to 62 random sites in the same environment. The results showed that spotted owl nest sites had higher canopies of dominant and intermediate trees.
