Inhibition of HIV-1 infectivity by zinc-ejecting aromatic C-nitroso compounds
Article Abstract:
Two C-nitroso aromatic compounds hinder the ability of the HIV-1 virus to infect human lymphocytes. The two compounds are 3-nitrosobenzamide and 6-nitroso-1,2-benzopyrone. The compounds also eject zinc from HIV-1 virions which are intact and from nucleocapsid zinc fingers of HIV-1 which are isolated. This suggests a new kind of drug therapy for the AIDS disease by attacking the zinc fingers of the retrovirus.

Structural basis for packaging the dimeric genome of Moloney murine leukaemia virus
Article Abstract:
Genomic RNA exists in virions as dimers, and the overlap of RNA elements that promote dimerization and encapsidation suggests that the processes may be coupled. It is shown that dimerization-induced register shifts in base pairing within the Psi-RNA packaging signal of Moloney murine leukaemia virus expose conserved UCUG elements that bind nucleocapsid domain (NC) with high affinity.

Ancient co-speciation of simian foamy viruses and primates
Article Abstract:
The co-speciation hypothesis in simian foamy viruses (SFVs) and their primate hosts are tested by comparing the phylogenies of SFV polymerase and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II obtained from African and Asian monkeys and apes. SFVs might have co-speciated with Old World primates for at least 30 million years, making them the oldest known vertebrate RNA viruses.
