Identification of an angiogenic mitogen selective for endocrine gland endothelium
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the identification of a growth factor, endocrine-gland-derived vascular endothelial growth factor, which acts selectively on one particular endothelium and which is largely expressed in one tissue type.

Inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor-induced angiogenesis suppresses tumour growth in vivo
Article Abstract:
Angiogenesis, or the development of new blood vessels, is essential to many physiological processes such as wound healing and corpus luteum formation. In addition, angiogenesis is significant in the pathogenesis of tumor growth and metastasis. Basic and acidic fibroblast growth factors are two of the potential mediators of tumor angiogenesis. The possible role of vascular endothelial growth factor in inducing tumor angiogenesis in vivo was tested. This was done by injecting human rhabdomyosarcoma, gliobastoma multiforme or leiomyosarcoma cell lines into nude mice.

Heterozygous embryonic lethality induced by targeted inactivation of the VEGF gene
Article Abstract:
The disruption of a single vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene in the embryonic stem (ES) cells causes lethality within 11-12 days in a nude mouse model. Defective angiogenesis and blood-island development produces several physiological and pathological abnormalities. This confirms the importance of VEGF in pathological angiogenesis. The ES cells lacking VEGF allele are inactive in tumorigenesis.
