Interaction of polyadenylate-binding protein with the elF4G homologue PAIP enhances translation
Article Abstract:
Initiation of eukaryote translation involves binding the small ribosomal subunit to the messenger RNA, a result of cap-binding complex eIF4F recognising the 5' cap structure of the mRNA. eIF4F comprises the subunits eIF4E, eIF4A and eIF4G. It has been shown in yeasts and plants that poly(A)-binding protein (PABP), associated with the mRNA 3' polyadenylate tail, interacts with eIF4G, but no similar interaction has been found in mammalian cells. A new study reveals a novel human-PABP-interacting protein, PAIP-1, with a similar sequence to the central portion of eIF4G, which interacts with eIF4A.

Dual function of the messenger RNA cap structure in poly(A)-tail-promoted translation in yeast
Article Abstract:
The initiation and control of translation in eukaryoyes is affected by the messenger RNA 3' poly(A) tail, which is described as a translational enhancer, enhancing the activity of the mRNA 5'-cap structure. A new study of Saccharomyces cerevisiae uses cell-free and in vivo translation analyses to show that the poly(A)tail can act as a separate translational promoter in its own right even if the 5' end of the mRNA 5'-cap structure is blocked.

Eukaryotic ribosomes require initiation factors 1 and 1A to locate initiation codons
Article Abstract:
Protein synthesis in eukaryotes is believed to start when the ribosome attaches to the messenger RNA's 5' cap and proceeds along it to begin initiation at the first available ATG codon. New research shows that scanning needs not only the eukaryotic initiation factors 2, 3, 4A, 4B and 4F, but also extra factors eIF1 and eIF1A.
