Interagency blast for wetlands
Article Abstract:
The Fish and Wildlife service (FWS) through the Washington State Ecosystems Conservation program provides cost-sharing and technical assistance for wetland habitat restoration. The wetlands are a place of stored water and plant ecosystem which foster the growth of wildlife, such as the endangered spotted frogs, olive-sided fly catcher, birds and bats. The depletion of such habitats has affected wildlife that are unique to this ecosystem. The initial phase of the project restored seven open water wetland habitats in 1995 using explosives with the assistance of private land owners.

Island habitats: a stronghold of carnivore biodiversity in agriculturally modified environments
Article Abstract:
Landscape changes in the Great Plains and the decline of prey species have prompted the area's gray wolves and black bears to retreat to isolated 'island-like' habitats, such as the Pembina Escarpment and the Turtle Mountains, while the pumas chose to stay in the ecoregions and in the Badlands. Since the recent increase in the sightings and signs of these predators suggests juvenile dispersal from breeding populations, landowners face the dilemma of having to protect their economic interests while obeying laws that mean to reestablish these carnivores in proper habitat islands.

A farmer sows wildlife habitat
Article Abstract:
A veterinarian, John Anderson, began intensive rowcrop farming, incorporating wildlife habitat borders, in 1976. With the assistance of the Fish and Wildlife Service, he has incorporated more than 70 species of native perennial grasses, forbs, sedges, rushes, shrubs, and trees on the farms. It is also home to several species of rare and endangered birds. The farm anchored six habitat restoration workshops. Several universities are referring to it for field trips.
