Involvement of an orthologue of the Drosophila pair-rule gene hairy in segment formation of the short germ-band embryo of Tribolium (Coleoptera)
Article Abstract:
Short germ insect embryos could use segmentation mechanisms of paired genes. Long germ insects such as Drosophila fruit flies use pair rules for such genes as hairy, and it has been assumed that short germ insects do not use pair rules. However, an orthologue to hairy has been found for the flour beetle Tribolium which is a short germ insect. Similarly, an orthologue to Drosophila's regulating gap gene Kruppel has also been found in Tribolium.

Debatable homologies
Article Abstract:
Richard Owen's original concept of homology had not phylogenetic or evolutionary perspective, and was based on identifying and grouping similarities in nature. Phylogenetic continuity as the the main criterion for homology creates the problem of circularity. Homologues should be viewed as coherent units of phenotypic evolution, with developmental and variational constraints.

Mitochondrial protein phylogeny joins myriapods with chelicerates
Article Abstract:
Research into the phylogenetic information content of the mitochondrial genome of the centipede species Lithobius forficatus is presented. There is strong evidence for a sister group connection between Myriapoda and Chelicerata.
