Iron flicks the switch
Article Abstract:
Abraham Shanzer and his co-workers have studied molecular switches found in the supramolecular machines of chemical compounds. The compound studied has a central nitrogen atom to which three chains are attached and each chain has two metal binding sites. The iron(III) and the iron (II) complexes choose different binding sites according to their oxidation state. When the ion's oxidation state changes, the iron complex switches sites in the compound changing the compound's colour and so the switch is highly visible.

Self-assembled monolayer organic field-effect transistors
Article Abstract:
The use of a third gate electrode has made it possible to show gain for electronic transport perpendicular to a single molecular layer. Work with field-effect transistors based on self-assembled monolayers shows conductance modulation of greater than five orders of magnitude.
