Japan reviews first guidelines for gene therapy trials
Article Abstract:
A committee of Japan's Ministry of Health and Welfare has compiled and released some guidelines regarding gene therapy trials. These guidelines include the prohibition of genetic manipulation of reproductive cells to avoid potential impacts on future generations. Gene therapy is allowed for terminal diseases such as cancer and AIDS, for which no effective remedy exists. Internal review boards of hospitals and medical research institutes, which are overseen by the Ministry of health and Welfare, were asked to review their internal protocols. An advisory committee of DNA specialists will be established.

Japan topples tradition with move to foreign reviewers
Article Abstract:
Tokyo University has invited Western and Japanese scientists to participate in a review of its physics department in Jan 1993. The university is carrying out the review in compliance with the University Council's requirement for internal self-evaluation. However, the school has gone beyond this policy by making the review external and by including foreigners as reviewers. University president Akito Arima and science dean Ikuo Kushiro probably chose this bold plan as a means of winning new financial support from the government.
