Kafatos to EMBL director; promises greater opportunity
Article Abstract:
Developmental biologist Fotis Kafatos was appointed as the new director general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The new head promised to provide equal opportunities for scientists regardless of gender and nationality. To prove his commitment to the laboratory, Kafatos resigned from his post at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Greece and will give up his teaching job at Harvard. To ensure the smmoth running of the institute, the new head asked for more cooperation between the EMBL and member countries.

Chile promises to try harder over VLT dispute
Article Abstract:
Construction of the world's largest optical telescope in Chile, which was slowed down because of a dispute over ownership of the site, may finally continue. The delay has already increased the costs by $36 million. In Apr 1995, the Chilean government promised to make the European Southern Observatory (ESO) immune from national laws. ESO is still considering moving the construction site to another country if the Chilean government does not fulfill its promise within two months.

EMBL rescue package keeps bioinformatics centre running
Article Abstract:
Delegates of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's (EMBL) member states have agreed in principle to make up the shortfall in the running costs of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). However some member states could not pledge money immediately, and the EBI's budget must double if it is to become a competitive global force in bioinformatics.
