Ketamine-medetomidine or isoflurane immobilization of black-footed ferrets
Article Abstract:
A new study evaluates two anesthetic systems which immobilize captive-bred ferrets for examination before they are released into the wild. The first is a combination of medetomidine and ketamine, the second is isoflurane gas anesthesia. It is shown that both methods can be safely used, although less physiological disturbance results from isoflurane gas. The endangered black-footed ferrets was once commonly found from the southwest US to Saskatchewan but their almost exclusives reliance on prairie dogs for food and shelter has seen their numbers declining alongside those of prairie dogs and they are close to extinction.
