The tinkerer's evolving tool-box
Article Abstract:
Two papers on microbial genetics go beyond the assumption that genetic mutations appear to be evenly spread throughout a population. Such an assumption was based on the idea that random insults from outside an organism directly result in mutations. It is now known that mutations are caused internally by allele-containing gene products. A theoretical study of asexual, clonal populations suggests that the rate at which more fit individuals appear in the population is governed by the ability to generate mutator alleles. A second study shows that the mutator phenotype of some clonal populations of E. coli subjected to alternating periods of growth and stoppage was caused by defective genes involved in DNA repair.
