Kidnappings 'must not deter' sponsors of research trips
Article Abstract:
The UK's Birdlife International hopes that the recent kidnapping of the members of Lorentz 95, a 20,000-sterling pound expedition organized by four University of Cambridge graduates, would not frighten young people from joining such trips in the future. Some 24 expedition members were kidnapped by the Free Papua Movement, a group that wants to break away from Indonesia and join Papua New Guinea since the 1960s. It also wants some gold and copper shares being mined by US companies on the coast of Irian Jaya. The incident has again raised the question of the safety of such expeditions.

Africa seeks laws on GM food exports..
Article Abstract:
African countries may have to introduce laws that make it illegal for a country to export genetically modified (GM) food without the prior permission of the importing country. At the international biosafety protocol, African countries sought to insert a clause to this effect, but it was opposed by grain-exporting countries which argued that a product should not need permission and additional risk assessments, if it had passed safety tests in its country of origin.

UK life science students seek better deal
Article Abstract:
Life scientists in Britain are planning to lobby the government to double the value of the student stipend and add an optional foundation year to the current three-year PhD programmes. They believe that existing organization have not communicated their concerns to the government effectively, and want to create a body to lobby the government on their behalf. The foundation year would be a way of attracting and retaining able students, they believe.
