Kin recognition in golden hamsters: evidence for kinship odours
Article Abstract:
Kin recognition in golden hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, was investigated by studying the discrimination of flank gland secretion odor among siblings, half-siblings and unrelated individuals. Results indicate that individual golden hamsters discriminate the odors from siblings reared with them but failed to discriminate that of half-siblings reared separately and that of unrelated individuals. The discrimination of siblings through odor recognition may have been brought about by close association during rearing.

Individual scent signatures in golden hamsters: evidence for specialization of function
Article Abstract:
The capacity of male golden hamsters to recognize scents of different individuals shows that they can distinguish between individual conspecifics when faeces, urine, flank and ear gland secretions are used. But they are unable to recognize individuals when saliva, ear, foot and vaginal secretions are used. The variability in the chemical compositions of these scents in individuals provides distinctive information, and helps in the identification of hamsters.

Individual recognition by use of odours in golden hamsters: the nature of individual representations
Article Abstract:
Research describing the use of odours for individual recognition by golden hamsters is presented. In particular habituation-discrimination techniques are used to examine the representations that individuals may have of each other.
