Land use and vegetation associated with greater prairie-chicken leks in an agricultural landscape
Article Abstract:
Prairie-chickens probably do not select for shrub cover during the breeding season. This research, undertaken in areas of Portage, Taylor, Wood, Clark and Marathon Counties, WI, involved sampling leks and random points to establish types and quantities of land use and vegetation connected with populations of prairie-chickens. This work highlighted the significance of grassland with residual cover on a landscape scale, with the grassland cover class being associated with lek presence at all scales.

Edge-related nest losses in Wisconsin pine barrens
Article Abstract:
The falling populations of many North American birds have been blamed on many factors, including edge-related nest predation by brown-headed cowbirds and human-induced habitat loss. An investigation of edge-related nest losses in Wisconsin pine barrens shows increased predation of artificial nests close to the forest-edge, together with increased populations of brown-headed cowbirds and corvids. The study suggests that the success of natural nests along forest edges may be reduced.

Representation of landcover along Breeding Bird Survey routes in the northern plains
Article Abstract:
Digital landcover data was used to examine how well landcover in 400-m buffers along the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes represented the surrounding landscape in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota and South Dakota. Results suggest that biases in inferences from BBS data may occur due to differences in landcover composition and landscape fragmentation.
