Landscape-scale attributes of elk centers of activity in the central Black Hills of South Dakota
Article Abstract:
A research is conducted on the environmental attributes associated with elk summer range in the central Black Hills of South Dakota, USA during 1998-2001. It is found that the number of elk locations was positively associated with elevation, proportion of non-road-dissected habitat, shape complexity of meadows, proportion of forest stands with [less than or equal to] 40% overstory carropy cover, and proportion of aspen (Populus tremuloides).

Evaluation of resource selection methods with different definitions of availability
Article Abstract:
A new study of Merriam's wild turkey hens with young in the Black Hills of South Dakota compares six statistical techniques for analyzing resource selection data. Habitat was the single variable used for the comparisons. The effects of varying the available habitats on the statistical methods was also examined. The study shows that method choice for evaluating resource selection affects inferences about wildlife habitat requirements.

Preburn characteristics and woodpecker use of burned coniferous forests
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted in the Black Hills in South Dakota to determine the impact of burned out coniferous sites on the nesting areas of woodpeckers. Results showed that burned out areas affected woodpecker nesting sites and resulted in lower number of nesting sites than before the fire.
