Galactic origin of cosmic rays
Article Abstract:
Gamma ray data from the Small Magellanic Cloud showed that cosmic rays are galactic in origin and are not distributed evenly through space. Astrophysicists have long debated whether cosmic rays exist between galaxies as well as inside them. Russian astrophysicist V.L. Ginzburg hypothesized in 1972 that gamma ray data from the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy, could settle whether cosmic rays are galactic or metagalactic. Evidence obtained by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory bore out the galactic theory.

Bringing photosynthesis to the bench
Article Abstract:
The Born-Oppenheimer approximation suggests that the motions of atomic nuclei are slower than those of electron motions, so nculei are considered to be static while calculating their electronic states. Jean-Louis Martin and his colleagues from INSERM Applied Optics Laboratory examined the effect of the absorption of light on the reaction centers of photosynthesizing purple bacteria. They discovered that the reaction time is less than that of the atomic nuclei of the protein parts in the bacteria.
