Large groundwater inputs to coastal waters revealed by 226Ra enrichments
Article Abstract:
The high levels of 226Ra observed in the coastal waters of the South Atlantic Bight show that ground water flows directly into the coastal waters. The groundwater discharge was around 40% of the river-water flux during Jul 1994. The high content of salt water in the coastal aquifers causes desorption of 226Ra. The increased use of groundwater by man, rise of sea level, and other factors contribute to a high salt water content. The brackish coastal waters are rich in other metals, nutrients, and organic matter.

Large herbivores in rangelands
Article Abstract:
African rangelands have the same biomass for a given rainfall and soil quality regardless of whether the range is managed or wild. This contradicts findings about South America. Statistical analysis of a larger number of sites than previously considered, and controlling for soil value, shows that basic range management does not lead to higher total biomass, and that soil value is crucial to carrying capacity. However, a rebuttal analysis shows that the data used in this study were too biassed to be reliable.
