Organic groups cling to the pores
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of a zeolite functionalized with organic groups has made it possible to identify a new class of shape-selective catalyst. This research involved synthesizing zeolite beta functionalized with organic groups, merely by adding the organosilicon compound phenylethyl-trimethoxysilane to the synthesis gel. Once the zeolite forms, the organic phenylethyl groups act as anchors for the sulphonic-acid groups. This approach is only suitable for zeolites that can be synthesized without an organic structure-directing agent (SDA), or when the SDA can be dissolved out.

Tiling by numbers
Article Abstract:
Delgado Friedrichs and colleagues have described a mathematically rigorous and complete enumeration of the main classes of crystal structures. Their enumeration proceeds from the first uninodal structures, then binodal, although the question of whether the tiles are convex or not does not arise. A simple form comes from dual trinodal nets, and the possibility of systematically enumerating packings with more than one type of sphere may result in the identification of new intermetallic structure types.
