Larval competition and egg-laying decisions by the bean weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus
Article Abstract:
Oviposition decision models that include varying probabilities for accepting a bean for oviposition determine the relationship between larval competition and egg-laying decisions by the female Callosobruchus maculatus bean weevil. Four geographical cowpea strains with strong larval competition use a relative oviposition rule that incorporates the degree of larval competition. A strain with weak larval competition uses an absolute oviposition rule that incorporates the payoff acquired by ovipositioning the egg. Factors affecting the rule-choice and the evolution of the decision rules are discussed.

Why do some caddis larvae in running waters construct heavy, bulky cases?
Article Abstract:
Studies suggested that caddis-larvae constructed large and bulky cases for protection and respiration. However, new findings showed that current strength and rate and level of predation had no effect on the case-making behavior of caddis-flies. The exposure of the cases to small bullhead and brown trout had no effect on the mass and width of the cases built by the larvae after the attacks. This indicates that predation had no effect on the caddis-flies' case-building behavior.
