Leave the man alone: the argument between researchers and the animal rights movements go back a long way
Article Abstract:
Charles Darwin's comments on the necessity of animal experimentation for the progress of physiological knowledge and the saving of human lives should dissuade modern animal rights activists from citing Darwin as someone who would have supported their attacks on laboratories. Darwin's remarks appeared in the Apr 21, 1892 edition of 'Nature.' Moreover, Darwin's quotation demonstrates that the debate over the use of laboratory animals is not a new one.

Seal whiskers detect water movements
Article Abstract:
It is shown that harbour seals use their whiskers to detect minute water movements, allowing access to hydrodynamic information. Pinnipeds do not have an active sonar system and hydrodynamic sensory systems have evolved in aquatic animals. The whiskers adapt to afferent fibres, responding to miniscule deflections of the hair shaft. They are well tuned to the frequency range of water movements generated by fish.

Saccades without eye movements
Article Abstract:
Human subjects use a pattern of eye movements to read text, consisting of fast saccadic movements and fixations. A subject who cannot make eye movements, and who uses head movements to compensate, has been studied. The head movements are saccadic character and show several features that distinguish eye movements.
