Letter from Belize
Article Abstract:
The government of Belize has moved to protect to the Glovers Reef coral atoll. The area open to fishing has been cut 25%, limiting fishing to only a couple of native co-operatives. The hope is increase the fish population dramatically, recolonizing the reef in a manner similar to Belize's Hol Chan Barrier Reef, which made a strong recovery after declaration as a marine reserve in 19870. Both areas have been declared to be parts of a World Heritage Site.
