Letter from Venezuela
Article Abstract:
The banks and waters of the Caura River in Venezuela are home to thousands of life forms ranging from insects and microbes to birds, all fed by the river's incessant floods. The river is a tributary of the Orinoco, and it dras its start from a large watershed and ends in a huge waterfall in Salto Para. In comparison with New England's rather tame watersheds and wildlife, the abundance along the Caura creates a real chaos of different life forms. The river is also home to many native fishermen, who have at times over-extended the river's resources.

Letter from Patagonia
Article Abstract:
A WCS field scientist narrates his experiences during a visit to Patagonia, Argentina, to study the whereabouts of female sea lions during breeding seasons. In Feb, 1995, he visited the coastal areas to count animals and note the effects of oil pollution, ecotourism, and fisheries on the ecosystem. In March, he found that the guanacos' numbers outside were twice those in the reserve. In April, he studied the effects of tourism on southern right whales. The scientist is also a teacher, social worker, writer, and photographer.

John and Terese Hart began their study on the hunting economy of Mbuti in the Ituri Forest in Zaire during the early 1970s. They have helped in conserving the wildlife of the Mbuti pygmies such as the okapis. The CEFRECOF (Centre de Formation et de Recherche en Conservation Forestiere) is a training center which gives students and professors of the University of Kisangani a foundation for studying the Ituri Forest's biological diversity.
