Liquid landscape
Article Abstract:
Supercooled liquids can change to a microscopically fixed, but amorphous state, a glass. Sastry, Debenedetti and Stillinger have demonstrated that changes in the dynamic properties of glass-forming liquids can be linked to changes in the underlying energy landscape of the system. The landscape model describes systems ranging from economics and evolution, neural networks, proteins, and molecular clusters. The new system contains argon atoms of different sizes, which interact to stabilize the liquid and make it impossible to find a crystal minimum. The system is then quenched to determine the internal energy of the inherent structure.

Size is everything
Article Abstract:
The melting point of small particles is normally measured by heating the material and recording the temperature at which it liquefies. New research examines the melting temperature of clusters and shows that it is size-dependent. A large and irregular temperature variation is recorded, revealing that the melting temperature of sodium clusters can be significantly changed by altering their size by a few atoms. These variations have not yet been fully explained theoretically.

Cool sounds
Article Abstract:
Research has established a thermoacoustic refrigerator design consisting of a open-ended resonator which uses externally applied flow for cooling without a cold heat exchanger. The design, illustrated, could be developed to become superior to a conventional closed-off thermoacoustic refrigerator design.
