Lynx recruitment during a snowshoe hare population peak and decline in southwest Yukon
Article Abstract:
Better decisions regarding lynx management is made when based on lynx recruitment rather than on change in hare population. Trapping is actually beneficial to lynx communities during a decline in hare population as it lowers the competition and increases recruitment. However, trapping season should be opened later in the winter to lower the occurence of orphaned kittens early in the winter. Lowered reproduction among lynx adults after a decline in hare population, indicates a direct demographic relationship between the two species and that one is dependent on the other for survival.

Power analysis of wolf-moose functional responses
Article Abstract:
Different shapes of functional responses in the predator-prey relationships between wolves and ungulates were investigated. Simulated datasets based on the typical variances found in wolf-moose predation data were utilized to assess the sample size needed to distinguish between two common forms of wolf functional response. Results suggest that it is more advantageous to measure total predation losses than to determine the shape of the functional response.
