Magnesium sulphate salts and the history of water on Mars
Article Abstract:
An examination on the formation and transformation of MgSO4.nH2O minerals precipitated by evaporation from MgSO4 solutions or transformed in the solid state under conditions of controlled temperature and humidity is presented. It is concluded that crystalline structure and H2O content are dependent on temperature-pressure history, that an amorphous hydrated phase with slow dehydration kinetics forms at <1percent relative humidity, and that equilibrium calculations may not reflect the true H2O-bearing potential of martian soils.

Formation of recent martian gullies through melting of extensive water-rich snow deposits
Article Abstract:
Gullies seen on the surface of Mars appear to prove the existence of liquid water on the planet, and thus the possibility of life. Despite the current cold climate, a model can be generated for the location and age of the gullies that involves migration of the snowpacks to the mid-latitudes of the planet. If melting in the snowpacks occurred, the gullies may have formed in the space of about 5,000 years.

Martian gullies tempt NASA to look for water
Article Abstract:
The search by NASA for signs of the presence of water on the surface of the planet Mars has uncovered geological structures which appear to have been formed by flowing water.
