Magnified cortex in star-nosed moles
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the nasal appendages of star-nosed moles indicates that in the somatosensory system, the cortical representations of peripheral inputs are unsymmetrically expanded. The sizes of the cortical representations are not proportionate to their peripheral innervation densities. All mammals possess sensory surfaces with cortical representations. The magnification of cortical areas related to the somatosensory system may be related to higher peripheral stimulation.

Sleep in Drosophila is regulated by adult mushroom bodies
Article Abstract:
Large changes in sleep are achieved by spatial and temporal enhancement of cyclin-AMP-dependent protein kinase activity specifically in the adult mushroom bodies of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster. Other manipulations of the mushroom bodies, such as electrical silencing, increasing excitation or ablation, also alter sleep and these results link sleep regulation to an anatomical locus involved in learning and memory.

Asymptotic prey profitability drives star-nosed moles to the foraging speed limit
Article Abstract:
Evidence is provided about the unusual anatomical and behavioral specifications characterizing star-nosed moles resulted from progressively stronger selection for speed, allowing the progressive addition of small prey to their diet. A report is given handling times as short as 120ms for moles identifying and eating prey.
