Makah whalers claim first victim
Article Abstract:
The whale hunt organized by the Pacific Northwest Makah tribe ended with the killing on May 17, 1999, of a three-year-old female gray whale. The whale is the first casualty of an agreement between the tribe and the US Department of Commerce that permits the slaughter of 20 whales until 2002.

Anti-whaling activists think that whalers of the North American Makah may attempt a seventh hunt despite the ban imposed by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals on June 9th 2000, aimed at allowing time to assess the whale populations.
