Making the connection
Article Abstract:
Enabling people to see the association between environmental deterioration and the less popular endangered species increases their understanding of the need for conservation and recovery plans. Increasing public awareness about the endangered dwarf wedge mussel, and the fact that their decreasing number is indicative of poor water quality lead to improved efforts for the protection of the mussels and their habitat. Similarly, knowledge of the link between the Karner blue butterfly and the blue lupine resulted in preservation of the pine barren habitat.

Giving orchids a helping hand
Article Abstract:
The Nature Conservancy launched a restoration project for the endangered eastern prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea) in Illinois. The initiative involved hand pollination to compensate for the failure of natural pollinators to visit the orchids. Seeds were collected and dispersed at selected sites with the help of volunteers. The efforts paid off as orchids began to bloom after only four years.
