Mammalian facilitative hexose transporters mediate the transport of dehydroascorbic acid
Article Abstract:
An examination of the xenopus laevis oocyte expression system shows that the oxidized form of dehydroascorbic acid (vit C) is transported efficiently by the mammalian facilitative hexose transporters. In oocyte systems, two transport pathways, one with low affinity and one with high affinity for dehydroascorbic acid were found. The mammalian facilitative hexose transporters are physiologically significant for the uptake and accumulation of vit C by cells.

Does vitamin C have a pro-oxidant effect?
Article Abstract:
The conclusions by Podmore and colleagues relating to vitamin C supplements and pro-oxidants effects, are undermined by certain unaddressed scientific issues. Data on plasma vitamin C concentrations were expressed as percentage changes only, and as it was an experimental design it did not consider the fact that cells become saturated with vitamin C at lower doses than plasma, and an inappropriate choice of tissue sampled for vitamin C.

The biosynthetic pathway of vitamin C in higher plants
Article Abstract:
Research has established that the biochemicals D-mannose and L-galactose interact with the enzyme GDP-D-mannose-3,5-epimerase in the ascorbate (vitamin C) synthesis pathway. The biochemical pathway to synthesise ascorbate from GDP-D-mannose is thought to involve the biochemicals GDP-L-galactose, L-galactono-1,4-lactone, L-galactose and GDP-D-mannose.
