Mate switching as a function of mate quality in convict cichlids, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum
Article Abstract:
Convict cichlids, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, were used in the investigation of the influence of mate size on mate switching. Size-mismatched and size-matched pairs were reared in a partitioned aquarium. When the partition was removed, the mismatched pairs re-sorted 46% of the time while size-matched pairs remained intact most of the time. Size determines the dominance relationship between two competing pairs of Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum. When there is a size disparity between the male and the female partner, the pair with the larger male dominates.

Mate choice copying and conspecific cueing in Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica
Article Abstract:
Recent experiments looking into the social influences on preferences of female Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica, showed that the 'focal' female tends to remain close to a previously nonpreferred male when she has observed that mate with another female. Further experiments undertook to explore such stimuli that change female quails' preferences. The results showed that focal females exhibited enhanced preferences for nonpreferred males observed mating.

The function of duetting in magpie-larks: conflict, cooperation, or commitment?
Article Abstract:
A study is presented which investigates the role of avian duetting, focussing on this phenomenon in magpie larks. The results demonstrated that magpie larks are able to recognise their neighbours by their song, and highlighted differences in duetting and solo singing.
