Maximal portion of the young pig's sulfur amino acid requirement that can befurnished by cystine
Article Abstract:
Three pig experiments were designed to assess the maximal portion of sulfur amino acid requirement that could be provided by cystine (Cys). In the first experiment, methionine (Met) deficient diet was fed to 4 groups with graded levels of L-Met to determine the inflection point in the Met dose-response curve which was estimated at .23%. The second, 24 pigs were fed with varying dietary Met:Cys ratios to assess Cys replacement value. Lesser weight gain was noted with the 40:60 group. In the third experiment, 4 groups fed with dietary SAA ratios set at 100:0, 55:45, 50:50, and 45:55, maintained at .111%, showed gains save for the last group.

Interactive effects of dietary levels of tryptophan and protein on voluntary feed intake and growth performance in pigs, in relation to plasma free amino acids and hypothalamic serotonin
Article Abstract:
Tryptophan-crude protein interactions in pig diets were evaluated. Dietary tryptophan (TRP) stimulates voluntary feed intake with subsequent increase in live weight, tissue gain and feed efficiency. Addition of crude protein (CP) in tryptophan-deficient diets aggravated the decrease in appetites. An imbalance in the TRP:large, neutral amino acids ratio as influenced by the TRP and CP levels, which in turn affect the brain serotonin concentration, directly affects the pigs' appetite. These observations were more marked in females as compared to castrated males.

Methionine requirement of pigs between 5 and 20 kilograms body weight
Article Abstract:
Four nursery studies were done to evalute the digestible methionine and dietary sulfur amino acid (SAA) requirements of 5 to 20-kg pigs. A methionine requirement of 0.255% of the diet was needed for maximal weight gain. If the digestibility of methionine is 89% in a pratical corn-soybean meal diets, then the total methionine requirement is 0.29% of the diet. If 50% of the sulfur amino acid can be derived from cystine, the total SAA requirement will be 0.58% of the diet.
