Medial temporal lobe imaging

Article Abstract:

The medial temporal lobe of the brain is active during verbal memory retrieval according to new imaging methods. The relation between medial temporal lobe and verbal memory is derived from studies of amnesia. Lesions in temporal lobes from stroke, infection, surgery or hypoxia may impair the ability commit information to long-term memory without any damage to intelligence or language. Short-term memory tasks may stimulate medial temporal activity in the normal brain to create a new long-term recall.

Allometry and simple epidemic models for microparasites

Article Abstract:

A standard epidemiological model based on threshold theorems analyzes the minimum transmission rate for a microparasite to establish itself in a mammalian host population. The model is developed by setting the death and birth rates of the host population as allometric functions of host body weight. The frequency-dependent transmission-rate increases allometrically with the body size. The model exhibits damped oscillations towards equilibrium densities in density-dependent transmission.

Imaging coexisting fluid domains in biomembrane models coupling curvature and line tension

Article Abstract:

Membranes formed from multiple lipid components can laterally separate into coexisting liquid phases, or domains, with distinct compositions. The experimental estimates of boundary tension between fluid bilayer domains are discussed.
