Medical bodies secure 'safe' data network
Article Abstract:
The British Medical Association has asked for the institution of a secure data network to electronically transmit patients' records, and thereby maintain their secrecy. This alternative to the Internet will enhance the standards of treatment and medical education. The government has accepted the proposal in principle and many telecommunications companies are coming forward to work on the project. Questions regarding data security on the network, regulation and access to information need to be resolved.

British universities object to idea of year-round terms
Article Abstract:
UK universities are opposing a plan to restructure the traditional 3-term academic year in the country. The plan, which was proposed by the government, involves the addition of an extra term over the summer. This is seen as an alleviating measure to overcrowding of courses due to unavailability of teachers and courses. University officials, especially those of research-intensive institutions, are wary of the plan, as it would entail year-round teaching which could be detrimental to research.

Food technology divides British teachers
Article Abstract:
Britain's new technology curriculum will be revised with a sharper definition of technology. The dispute currently centers on 'food technology,' which home economics teachers insist is important for teaching children to handle 'soft materials.' The Engineering Council wants cooking and related activities redefined as life skills. Sir Ron Dearing's Schools Curriculum and Assessment Authority will soon decide on a direction; Home Ec is the odds-on loser.
