Sexual selection in the Gulf Coast toad, Bufo valliceps: female choice based on variable characters
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the sexual behavior of female Gulf Coast toads by analyzing the male size and calling behavior of male toads. An analysis of calling behavior at different sites for two years showed that males with higher call rates at longer duration achieved greater mating success with females. The females were also observed to exhibit greater preference for large-sized males. The results conclude that larger male toads with high call rates had a mating advantage with female toads.

Sexual selection in the raucous toad, Bufo rangeri
Article Abstract:
A study exploring the female preferences of raucous toads over a period of three mating seasons was conducted. Results indicate that males compete only to establish acoustic areascalled leks. Female preferences were biased to male toads with high call rates and high attendance during mating nights. A downside to high attendance for male toads is the loss of weight. There was no significant effect of size on mating success.

Individual variation in male vocal traits and female mating preferences in Bufo americanus
Article Abstract:
The influence of four male vocal traits, dominant call frequency, pulse rate, call rate and call duration on mating success were investigated in the American toad, Bufo americanus. Body size is correlated with the dominant call frequency among interacting males. Larger males have a mating advantage over smaller ones as females have a preference for larger mates with calls having low dominant frequencies.
