Mercury contamination of fish and its implications for other wildlife of the Tapajos Basin, Brazilian Amazon
Article Abstract:
Mercury contamination of fish has been studied with attention to implications for other wildlife of the Tapajos Basin of the Brazilian Amazon. Findings have important implications for this and other tropical rainforests where gold mining operations bring pollution. Omnivores and piscivores living near gold-mining areas were found to be already at high risk of mercury toxification, with failure in reproduction especially a problem. Mercury concentrations in fish are now high enough to affect other animals. Fish samples were taken, 1991-1996, from along the Tapajos River and its seven tributaries.

Stakeholders' perceptions of a wading bird colony as a community resource in the Brazilian Pantanal
Article Abstract:
In the Brazilian Pantanal, large breeding colonies of ciconiiform wading birds are important tourist attractions, which is detrimental to the breeding behavior and success. An analysis reveals a series of human activities that potentially perturb nesting birds and emphasizes that a strong, well-enforced management plan and continued education of locals, tourists and the tourist industry is required.
