Methane formation from long-chain alkanes by anaerobic microorganisms
Article Abstract:
It has been established that anaerobic bacterial communities can convert long-chain alkanes to methane, the most basic hydrocarbon. Providing evidence for alkane conversion to methane and carbon dioxide has repercussions for the understanding of microbial processes during diagenesis. It is suggested that alkanes belong to the previously mainly unknown substrates that maintain slowly growing microbial communities and prompt methane formation in deep, old sediments.

A conspicuous nickel protein in microbial mats that oxidize methane anaerobically
Article Abstract:
A nickel compound that displays absorption spectrum similar to that of nickel cofactor F 430 is described. A search for AOM-associated cell components in microbial mats from anoxic methane seeps in the Black Sea was conducted.

A marine microbial consortium apparently mediating anaerobic oxidation of methane
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the conversion of methane in marine sediments to carbon dioxide through the action of anaerobic oxidation. The isolation of the microorganisms involved in this action are discussed.
